Project EXPORT Becomes The Center for Health Equality
Project EXPORT Fellows in Hardrock, Navajo NationIn response to the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research and Education Act of 2000 (Public Law 106-525), the National Institutes of Health’s National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) designated 23 higher learning institutions as Centers of Excellence. On February 1, 2003, the University of Arizona’s Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health was awarded a $6 million five-year comprehensive Center of Excellence in Partnership for Community Outreach, Research on Health Disparities and Training grant (known as Project EXPORT).

On August 31, 2004, Dean Marie Swanson sent a written request to University of Arizona President Peter Likens to rename The Center of Excellence in Partnerships for Community Outreach, Research on Health Disparities, and Training (Project EXPORT) to The Center for Health Equality.

Grassroots Community Focus
SEA Basketball KidsThe Arizona Project EXPORT employs a "grassroots" strategy that matches the needs of the community with the strengths of the local institution.

Activities of the Center for Health Equality include: Community outreach in Hardrock, AZ, located on the Navajo Nation, and the Sunnyside and Elvira Neighborhoods located on the Southside of Tucson; Project EXPORT Fellowships to enhance and expand graduate training in the health disparities areas of diabetes and substance abuse and pilot research projects such as Dr. Lynda Bergsma’s "Media Wise Families" and Ms. Maia Ingram’s "Animadora Project", as well as Dr. Xenia King’s study "Examing the Health and Well- Being of the Children and Youth of Hardrock Chapter".

EXPORT Fellowship Applications
Graduate students interested in entering or continuing a master’s or doctoral program in the fields of public health and epidemiology, Mexican American Studies, Latino health or American Indian Studies with an emphasis in health are encouraged to APPLY NOW for Project EXPORT fellowships.
