The Research Core is responsible for reviewing, funding, and supervising pilot studies that serve as health disparities research training for junior investigators. In Years I to II, four pilot studies were awarded and are in various stages of completion: Dr. Norma Gray’s study on the “Effectiveness of Culturally Focused Skills Training For Native Children to Enhance Self-Concept and Prevent Substance Use;” Dr. Lisa Staten on “Validating Self-Reported Physical Activity by Mexican Americans Participating in Community Programs;” Dr. Andrea Romero’s study on “Preventing Substance Use in Latino Youth: Juventud del S.O.L. (Saludable, Orgulloso y Latino) II;” and Dr. Anabel Hill’s “A User-Friendly, Searchable Database of Effective Adolescent Obesity Treatment and Prevention Programs.”

During the second-round of pilot study awards, the Research Core drafted and distributed Letters of Intent to UA, NAU and ASU faculty and academic professionals with diabetes or substance abuse interests. The Project EXPORT Team were particularly interested in awarding junior investigators who proposed to conduct pilot studies in Southside Tucson or in the Hardrock community. Two pilot studies being conducted in the neighborhoods of Southside Tucson were awarded under the Project EXPORT Center grant: Dr. Lynda Bergsma’s “Media Wise Families”; and Ms. Maia Ingram’s “Animadora Project”. Dr. Xenia King’s study “Examing the Health and Well- Being of the Children and Youth of Hardrock Chapter,” was also solicited and awarded in Year III of the grant.

Project EXPORT Pilot Study Investigators are awarded approximately $35,000 each to develop and conduct health disparities research in the areas of diabetes and substance abuse.

Eliminating Health Disparities
"These programs lay the foundation for our nation’s future efforts to eliminate health disparities that plague so many populations within our country. If we are to solve these problems, we must be more inclusive in our research endeavors."
