EXPORT Fellow and recent Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health graduate, Larissa Jazia Estes, recently received a 2006-2006 ASPH/HRSA Fellowship. The fellowship is located at HRSA’s Office of Women’s Health in Rockville, Maryland and has a second year fellowship option. Upon accepting the fellowship, Ms. Estes hopes to gain additional experience and directly pursue her career goal of influencing health care policies that affect minority communities who suffer disproportionately from health disparities. At HRSA, Ms. Estes will work the Bright Futures for Women’s Health and Wellness (BFWHW) Project; analyze policies related to women’s health; plan and implement HRSA worksite activities related to domestic violence and HIV/AIDS; and research and develop a women’s health-focus project.
The health-focused project will focus on women’s health along the US-Mexico border. Ms. Estes hopes to utilize her MPH degree (with a concentration in Family Child Health) and Project EXPORT experiences to help improve the health of women on both sides of the US-Mexico border. She also hopes to collaborate with Zuckerman College of Public Health and Project EXPORT faculty, staff and students during the course of her HRSA project. After her ASPH/HRSA fellowship, Ms. Estes plans to pursue a law degree in order to further her goals of influencing policies that affect the health of minority women and children.
