Biography:

Eyal Shahar, MD, MPH, brings to The University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health his wide-ranging experience in epidemiological research methods and cardiovascular research, which includes his work on numerous major grant-supported studies and a publication record of more than 100 articles. His current research focuses on atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, and the connection between heart disease and sleep apnea. Dr. Shahar has joined the UA Sarver Heart Center and collaborated on statewide research on CPR.

Currently, he is a co-investigator of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study, funded by the National Institutes of Health/National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NIH/NHLBI). The study looks at the origin and the natural history of atherosclerosis and atherosclerotic diseases in four United States communities. Dr. Shahar also is one of the Principal Investigators of the Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS), a multi-center study of the relation between sleep apnea (abnormal breathing during sleep) and cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Shahar earned his medical degree in 1987 from Tel-Aviv University in Tel-Aviv, Israel, where he was a practicing physician. He received his Master of Public Health degree in Epidemiology at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in 1992, after which he taught epidemiology for 14 years.

"I fell in love with this kind of science in which we make observations, collect data, and discover through measurements and statistics without any intervention. Science is about discovering the hidden reality – that which exists but is not directly visible to us," Dr. Shahar said. He is also working on an epidemiology textbook titled "The Logic and Math of Causal Inquiry: A Guide for the Perplexed".
