Epidemiology and Biostatistics
Home>Divisions>Epidemiology and Biostatistics
Mission
The mission of the division is to conduct research, provide education, and furnish public health scientific support in the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health to improve community and personal health. Epidemiology advances the knowledge of disease causation and natural history using rigorous and systematic study design and methods, illuminating the impact of biomedical, environmental, behavioral and social forces on the health of populations. Biostatistics ensures excellence in the application of statistical principles to public health research and in the training of health professionals.

Faculty
Almost all Epidemiology and Biostatistics faculty members in AHSC have their primary appointment in the division. There are other epidemiologically and biostatistically oriented faculty members who have joint appointments in the division and participate in teaching/research/service. View faculty directory.

Sections
Each division is sub-divided into sections that are aligned with academic areas.  The division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics consists of two sections:

     Epidemiology
          Chair:  Robin Harris, PhD

     Biostatistics
          Chair:  Denise Roe, Dr.PH

Educational Programs
The UA Zuckerman College of Public Health offers master’s (MS), doctorate (PhD), PhD minor and the MD-PhD joint degrees in Epidemiology. Multi-disciplinary collaborations among program faculty and members of university departments, state, and national health institutions provide classroom and community training opportunities.

Two concentrations of the College’s MPH degree program are housed in the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. The MPH in Epidemiology prepares professionals in basic epidemiological concepts and skills essential for public health research, program planning, and evaluation. These skills include a basic understanding of the pathogenesis of disease, techniques for evaluating effective strategies for disease prevention and control, the design of epidemiological studies including field surveys, and the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data. The MPH in Biostatistics incorporates the fundamental epidemiological elements of the MPH in Epidemiology with a greater emphasis on biostatistical analysis of complex research data.

The Arizona Clinical Research Training Program (AzCRTP) is a graduate certificate program at The Universiy of Arizona that prepares clinician scientists for the complexities of clinical research through high-quality didactic instruction and mentored research experiences.

This innovative training program integrates the knowledge and expertise of faculty and staff within the Arizona Health Sciences Center (AHSC) and other University of Arizona departments. The multidisciplinary approach provides opportunities for program scholars to acquire fundamental clinical research skills in a collaborative learning environment.
