Stephen Allen of ALERT giving his talk on human trafficking in Arizona.
GHA Events: Human Trafficking in Arizona
On March 3, 2009, Stephen Allen of the Arizona League to End Regional Trafficking (ALERT)spoke to GHA members, faculty and staff of the University of Arizona, and the public about Human Trafficking In Arizona at the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. The talk was organized by GHA member Lauren Pring.
Those attending the talk learned that between 14,500 and 17,500 victims are trafficked into the U.S. each year from other countries for labor or sexual exploitation. They also learned about this modern form of slavery, how it happens, and what people are doing to combat it. Mr. Allen also outlined ways that students, faculty, and the public can get involved in stopping this problem..
ALERT, a program of the International Rescue Committee - Phoenix, is a league representing law enforcement, faith-based communities, non-profit organizations, social service agencies, attorneys, and concerned citizens. Through education, outreach and a variety of programs and services ALERT strives to end the suffering and dehumanization of victims of human trafficking.
