SWPHLI Goals
The primary goal of the SWPHLI is to promote public health leadership, capacity and collaboration among professionals working in:
- State and local public health and other health settings
- Border communities in the U.S- México border region and/or
- Tribal health programs
The Southwest Public Health Leadership Institute, hosted by the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, serves public health professionals in Arizona and the southwest
through providing professional development opportunities.
This is accomplished via:
- Retreat style learning
- Professional mission and value clarification
- Envisioning a desired public health outcome through participation in an action learning based team- driven project
- Dialogue and meaningful exchange with other public health professionals
- Mentoring and coaching
- Competency-based public health leadership training
- Organizational and community development
- Technical assistance to both individuals and organizations
Public Health Professionals who participate in the SWPHLI will grow as leaders, as well as gain critical skills in the following areas:
- Communication
- Relationship Building
- Community Engagement and Mobilization
- Cultural and Social Competency
- Collaboration
- Advocacy
- Policy Development
- Ethics
- System's Thinking
Public Health Workforce Development
In addition to promoting leadership development, the SWPHLI provides workforce development opportunities for public health workers to build on their skills in basic public health sciences such as Public Health 101, Fundamentals of Epidemiology, community assessment, data interpretation, program planning, implementation and evaluation, community collaboration and advocacy.
