The Stoklos Native American Health Education Fund
Administration and Activities: University of Arizona
Purpose:
The Stoklos Native American Health Education Fund was established by Mary Stoklos and Michael Stoklos to support American Indian students pursuing a medical career through the support of regular activities that help build a supportive community for these students throughout their education and that help build visibility for American Indian health issues at the Arizona Health Sciences Center and the University of Arizona.
Activities:
The following regular activities will be implemented as yearly or ongoing activities for the Stoklos
Native American Health Education Fund:
The Stoklos Visiting Professorship:
Each year, in the spring semester, a 2-3 day event will be held in which a prominent American Indian physician with expertise in a selected Indian health topic will be formally invited to serve as a visiting professor. Target date: February or
March.

The Stoklos Lecture Series on Traditional Indian Medicine:
Each year, in the fall semester, a 1-2 day event will be held in which a prominent American Indian physician with expertise in traditional or alternative medicine will be formally invited to speak in a lecture series. Target date: September or October.

Blessing Ceremony and Reception for Entering American Indian Medical Students::
Each year, prior to the White Coat Ceremony during Medical School orientation, the Stoklos Foundation will sponsor a reception for entering medical and health professions students, their families, related support programs, local Indian physicians, faculty friends, and other invited guests to honor them and also provide a forum for introducing them to the supportive community available for them during their studies. Dr. Carlos Gonzales will perform his regular Blessing Ceremony for the entering medical students during or after this event. Target date: July
Honoring Ceremony for American Indian Medical School Graduates:
Each year, around the time of graduation, the Stoklos Fund will help sponsor the honoring ceremony held for graduating American Indian medical and health professions students and their families that is conducted by Dr. Carlos Gonzales and a traditional healer. Target date: May
The Stoklos Photographs of University of Arizona American Indian Medical School Graduates:
With the approval of the Vice President for Health Sciences, Mr. Stoklos has donated his expertise and time to photograph American Indian graduates of the University of Arizona Medical School to showcase the blending of their professional and cultural identities.
The Stoklos Native American Health Education Fund:
As an ongoing activity, the Stoklos Fund will provide support to American Indian medical students through small awards, scholarships, rewards and incentives, including the Stoklos Prize ($1000 annual award to a senior medical student who is committed to linking western and traditional medicine), the Stoklos Traditional Educational Linkage Fund (up to $250 to allow students to participate in traditional healing activities), the Stoklos Native American Recognition Awards ($1000 to a student who demonstrates commitment to linking western and traditional healing), and other awards and funding as determined by the needs of the medical students (medical equipment, supplies, travel to AAIP meetings, etc).
The Association of American Indian Physicians Annual Meeting and Annual Arizona Physician/Student Dinner Event:
The Stoklos Fund will provide supportive activities at the AAIP Annual Meeting, including photographic documentation of the student participation in the event, occasional support of student travel when other resources are not available, and funding for an annual dinner to provide an opportunity for University of Arizona students to meet informally with Indian physicians from Arizona who are attending the meeting. Target date: August
