Biography

Jennifer Hatcher, RN, MPH, PhD is a Professor at the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health -- Phoenix and the Associate Director for Community Outreach and Engagement for the University of Arizona Cancer Center. Dr. Hatcher is a community engaged researcher who is trained in health equity research. Her program of research focuses on improving the health of vulnerable populations with a focus on cancer prevention and control. Dr. Hatcher conducts research in partnership with communities that features novel and culturally appropriate interventions and activities designed to increase cancer screening and promote healthy nutrition and increased physical activity, thereby decreasing the risk for cancer and other chronic diseases. Her work includes the use of social media, text messages and other technology forward interventions and she partners with community members to conduct this research in community venues such as churches, community centers, and Emergency departments.

Dr. Hatcher is the founding director of DREAM (Disparities Researchers Equalizing Access for Minorities), a program designed to generate and disseminate knowledge that helps to equalize access and eliminate disparities in health status and health care for minorities through research, education, and community outreach. The DREAM program has three long term goals: to develop and test interventions that can be replicated and disseminated to demonstrably reduce health disparities, to create partnerships that result in understanding and reducing health disparities, including initiatives that increase the number of underrepresented minorities in the healthcare workforce and to train a new generation of health disparities researchers committed to the promotion of health equity for underrepresented minorities. DREAM Scholars KY, a training arm of the program is in its third year of operation at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Hatcher will establish DREAM AZ at MEZCOPH starting in 2018.

As the inaugural Associate Director of Community Outreach and Engagement for the University of Arizona Cancer Center, Dr. Hatcher is building an outreach team in both Tucson and Phoenix designed to be the bridge between UACC and the communities they serve. She brings a wealth of experience in working with underserved communities to improve health outcomes.
