    Hometown:

    Gig Harbor, Washington State

    Prior Degree(s):

    Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology, Central Washington University

    Before entering the program:

    After my undergraduate studies, I worked alongside Latin American Consulates and funeral homes in Washington State. Currently my research interests include perceptions of death, transnational policy and practice, border justice, environmental & health advocacy.

    Why did you choose public health?

    I chose Public Health for its pathways to serve the communities that look and don't look like me. As health continues to be innovative, I believe that there is an important role to play in public health. Especially through policy where I envision myself to grow and represent underserved peoples and strive for equity and health advocacy.

    Why did you choose MEZCOPH?

    I chose MEZCOPH for its opportunity to involve my passion t0 serve Latinx communities, to contribute towards healthier and more sustainable outcomes in border health. I envisioned myself continuing the path of becoming a successful scholar, researcher, and professor; conducting transnational research around meaningful societal/environmental struggles of Southwest and Latin America; and producing, in collaboration with local communities possible alternatives, and solutions. Thus, the MPH in Public Health Policy and Management at the University of Arizona presents to me a holistic space to pursue my graduate studies.

    Public health interests:

    Border Health, Health Disparities, Hispanic Health, Native American Health, Occupational Health, Public Health Policy

    Internship:

    Working with both Latin American Studies and Public Health, I am learning the ways in which I can marry both degree's expectations of a thesis/internship requirements--my hopes is to work along with Colibri a non profit organization that works along with migrant families in search for their loved ones missing along the Arizona, Sonoran desert, with hopes to reunite families. My thesis focus is on the migratory policies and other health policies that deem migrants in their journey through extreme terrains and realities here in the U.S, how in turn many migrants face fatal experiences and must confront a "bureaucratic" system that offers a conforming political system of repatriation. I would like to understand and expose the effects of transnational policies on bodies, and its effects on migrant communities between the U.S and parts of Latin America

    Interests/hobbies outside of school:

    I am a dancer at heart. I grew up dancing all kinds of latin beats, I love salsa, merengue, bachata, cumbia, banda, etc. I also really enjoy to cook for others, I am currently learning to be a better baker! My favorite to make is chocoflan.

    Tip for future students:

    Don't feel afraid to ask for help, support, or clarity! Be open to networking and being curious. Be sure to take advantage of office hours and extra help from professors and your classmates.
