Cody Welty’s Summer Internship Will Focus on Youth Suicide Prevention

Graduate student Cody Welty is heading to Maryland for the summer and an internship in the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). He is a first year Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) and doctoral student in health behavior health promotion. During his internship, Cody will conduct research and complete projects and reports pertaining to youth suicide prevention. 

SAMHSA is the agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation and to improve the lives of individuals living with mental and substance use disorders, and their families.

Cody’s responsibilities will include, researching critical behavioral health matters and developing briefing summaries for senior staff; planning and organizing special expert meetings related to the Interdepartmental Serious Mental Illness Coordinating Committee and Office of the Chief Medical Officer; planning and managing the educational series events and the Continuing Education Unit (CEU) program for staff; in addition to writing and communicating critical information on SAMHSA activities and events by working with the Office of Communication.
